You might try launching Octave directly from the short cut (start menu), instead of a pinned task bar icon To save my life I can not get the symbolic package to work in Octave because it is dependent on Sympy. Alternatively, some Linux distributions have SymPy packages available GNU Octave - Install, Load and Run the Symbolic package to enable symbolic functionality.GNU Octave (V4.4.1 used in video). The recommended method of installation is through Anaconda, which includes mpmath, as well as several other useful libraries. SymPy does require mpmath Python library to be installed first.
The SymPy CAS can be installed on virtually any computer with Python. After the install I ran a test (as shown in link above) by typing: pkg load symbolic syms x Installing symbolic package Connect to the internet Start Gnu Octave, On the octave prompt, give the following command: pkg install -forge symbolic This will install the latest symbolic.
In the Octave command window I typed: pkg install -forge symbolic. pkg install /PATH/YOU/DOWNLOADED/TO/symbolic-2.2.4.tar.gz if you downloaded the tar of the version you need So, I've installed the Octave Symbolic Package from here. pip install -user sympy Finally back to octave to run. If not installed run: sudo apt-get install python-pip Now you can run pip to get the new sympy.
